Getting to Labuan Bajo, and Komodo park fees
Flying into the gateway town, and what the park charges.
Flying into Labuan Bajo
The practical gateway to Komodo is Labuan Bajo, and most visitors reach it by air, with domestic flights connecting from major Indonesian hubs. It's grown into a well-established tourism town geared to Komodo trips, with accommodation, operators and restaurants. Flying in and basing yourself here for a night or two before and after your boat trip is how the vast majority of visitors do it.
Basing yourself in town
Labuan Bajo makes a comfortable base: you can arrive, settle in, join your boat tour, and return to a proper bed. Because tours often start very early, staying in town the night before your trip is sensible, and many people build in time afterwards to relax, dive, or explore Flores. Treating Labuan Bajo as your hub rather than rushing straight through makes the whole trip smoother.
Park and ranger fees
Komodo National Park charges entrance and associated fees, and ranger fees apply to the guided dragon walks. These support the park's protection and management. Whether the fees are included in your tour price or paid separately on the day varies between operators and packages, so it's important to check what your booking covers and to budget for park and ranger costs either way.
What to bring
For a Komodo boat trip, pack sun protection (the sun on the water is intense), a hat and sunglasses, swimwear and a quick-dry towel, sturdy footwear for the island walks, seasickness precautions if you're prone, and cash for any fees or extras. A dry bag for electronics is invaluable on a boat. Coming prepared for sun, sea and rugged terrain makes the day far more comfortable.
Planning the whole trip
A well-planned Komodo trip usually means flights into Labuan Bajo, a night or two in town, a boat tour matched to your time and interests, and a clear understanding of what fees apply. Sort those pieces — gateway, base, tour and fees — and you're free to focus on the dragons, the viewpoints and the extraordinary waters that make the park one of Indonesia's greatest experiences.
